Another Nussbaum Score Not Enough In Loss At Aquinas

Box Score

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Nate Nussbaum scored his second goal in 16 minutes of game time, but his team suffered the same result Saturday afternoon as it did Wednesday night when the Goshen College men's soccer side lost 2-1 at Aquinas College.

Nussbaum scored his second career goal after just 130 seconds, four days after his tally with 9:55 left in regulation pulled Goshen into a 1-1 tie with St. Xavier. In both cases, the joy was short-lived: Goshen lost in overtime 14 minutes later on Wednesday night and Aquinas tied the game 13 minutes later on Saturday afternoon.

The Saints pulled level on a 16th-minute strike from Jacob Bedi, then took the lead on a goal by Matt Jackson with 39:47 to play when he headed home a Bedi corner. That the score was not more lopsided is a product of Goshen goalkeeper Dean Nafziger, who made five saves as the Saints outshot the Maple Leafs 22-7.

Nussbaum led all Goshen players with five shots on the afternoon: Isaac Huerta was the only other Maple Leaf to put the ball on frame.

Goshen's record falls to 1-6 with the loss, but the Maple Leafs will have their longest break of the season to recuperate from this game. The Maple Leafs do not play midweek before traveling to Madonna on Saturday, Sept. 19 for a 2 p.m. match.

More, including comments from head coach Arron Patrick, to come when available.
