Box Score LIVONIA, Mich. — The non-conference slate for the Goshen College men's soccer team ended Saturday the same way it started four weeks ago: disappointed over a loss, but optimistic for the future as the Maple Leafs lost 3-0 at Madonna University.
The host Crusaders opened the scoring in the 12th minute, using a headwind to their advantage as a shot by Felipe Lupion instead fell to Amadou Cisse in front of the goal. In the second half, Madonna added an insurance goal with 10:31 to play on a through ball from midfield that Colin Wilden headed home: four minutes later, Felipe Guiamares made the score 3-0 when he scored on a rebound from another Lupion shot.
Goshen led in shots for most of the game before the Crusaders passed a tiring Maple Leaf attack to finish with a 16-12 lead in that category: unfortunately, the Maple Leafs put just seven of their 12 attempts on frame. Goshen used just three substitutes during the match.
Nate Nussbaum led Goshen with four shots, including one that would have given his team the lead in the ninth minute. Chris Vendrely also had an attempt on frame later in the half that would have tied the game. Johan Escalante made five saves in goal.
The Maple Leafs will have six days off in an attempt to right their wrongs before beginning conference play: Goshen, which finishes its non-conference slate with a 1-7 record, commences Crossroads League action on Saturday with a 7 p.m. kickoff at Marian.
