GOSHEN, Ind. — The Goshen College men's and women's tennis teams got matching wins at no. 4 singles from Juan Miguel Ciudad and Chloe Woodward respectively but came away with matching 8-1 losses to Indiana Tech in non-conference action Monday afternoon.
Ciudad won 10-6 in a third-set super tiebreak after dropping the first set 6-4 before coming back to win the second 6-3. Woodward, on the other hand, won by a more conventional 6-3, 7-5 score.
Outside of Goshen's two victories, the Warriors won each singles match in straight sets. The Maple Leaf men (3-4, 2-2 Crossroads League) got as close as 6-4 in a first-set effort from Kartikeya Sharma at no. 3 singles; the women (0-6, 0-4) had a near-miss in Chelsea Katchmazenski's 7-5 first set at no. 5.
Goshen's men came within one break of serve of wins at no. 1 doubles (Sharma and Eric Zuercher) and no. 3 doubles (Juan Miguel Ciudad and Eric Cender) but lost 8-5 in both cases.
Both Goshen teams return to conference play by hosting Saint Francis at 4 p.m. Tuesday. The men continue their schedule over the weekend at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's regional tournament in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
