Late-Season Trip To Huntington Comes Up Empty

HUNTINGTON, Ind. — Huntington University won a pair of tennis decisions from Goshen College on Thursday, with the Foresters winning the men's match 8-1 and the women's match 9-0 on the HU campus.

Kartikeya Sharma posted Goshen's only win of the twinbill, a 6-1, 6-0 drubbing of Giovanni Martinez at no. 3 singles on the men's side. In doubles action, Sharma and Eric Zuercher lost 8-2 to Ignacio Poncio and Mariano Echevarria.

Eric Cender played the only three-set match of the day at men's no. 5 singles, winning the first set 6-2 before losing 6-3 in the second and 10-4 in the match-deciding super-tiebreak against Forester freshman Luke Buttermore.

The Foresters claimed each of the remaining 10 singles matches in straight sets, including three 6-0, 6-0 affairs, and swept the six doubles positions.

In women's action, Kendra Lozano played to a 6-0, 6-2 defeat at no. 3 singles while Noemi Salvador played to the same scoreline with the sets reversed at no. 1. Lozano and Chloe Woodward claimed Goshen's only game of doubles play in an 8-1 loss at no. 2.

The loss drops Goshen's men to 4-6 overall and 3-4 in Crossroads League play while the women are 0-9 and 0-7. Huntington's women are 4-2 in league play; the men are 3-2.

Thursday was the penultimate conference match of the season for both Goshen sides. The men will meet Cornerstone at 4 p.m. Friday in a non-conference match before both teams conclude their regular seasons with a road trip to Taylor at 11 a.m. Saturday.
