Box Score 2 GOSHEN, Ind. — Back-to-back doubles from Emily Namisnak and Sandra Rodriguez pushed the Goshen College softball team to its fifth win of the season Tuesday in the first game of a Crossroads League doubleheader with Taylor University as the Maple Leafs edged the Trojans 3-1 at the John Ingold Athletic Complex.
Taylor (10-9, 1-3) managed one hit in each of the first four innings off Goshen starter Alexis Carpenter, while Courtney Moriarty held the Maple Leafs (5-5, 2-2) to two hits in the home team's five offensive innings other than the third.
Unfortunately for the Trojans, the rule book does not permit them to selectively disregard innings: in that third frame, Jenna Thompson stroked a leadoff single and Candace Sutter reached on a fielding error three batters later. Namisnak and Rodriguez followed with their two-baggers to give Carpenter all the help she needed.
Goshen's starter retired the opposition without incident in the fifth and sixth innings: she would yield a run on three singles in the seventh, but seconds later a trailing runner was retired trying for third and Carpenter struck out Lauren Ehle to end the game. She finished with one run in the complete-game win, allowing seven hits and striking out six.
The five Maple Leaf hits came from five different players, with the third-inning doubles forming the team's only extra-base hits. Moriarty, Alex Lovelace and Cassie Kuizin each posted two Trojan hits.
In the second game, it was Goshen's turn to wish it could selectively disregard innings in a 12-0 loss that saw Taylor score thrice in the opening frame, five times in the sixth, and in three of the four intervening stanzas.
Sutter singled twice for the Leafs while Courtney Crapser reached by way of both hit and walk. Taylor pounded five home runs in the contest, including four in their final inning before the game was shortened by the run rule.
Moriarty led all players with three hits in three tries, including two home runs: she scored three times and drove in three runs, accounting for half the team's tallies in one form or another. Dani Wyse and Davis Carter both had two hits, while Wyse and Erin Cozad also knocked in a trio each.
Hannah Robbins took home the complete-game win for the visitors while Brooke Maes threw 5 ⅓ innings in relief and Leah Horner saw her first collegiate action for Goshen.
GC returns to action on another set of consecutive days this weekend, hosting Mount Vernon Nazarene at 3 p.m. Friday on campus and visiting Grace at the same time on Saturday
