Box Score 4 WINONA LAKE, Ind. — Candace Sutter went 2 for 3 in the nightcap and Brooke Maes knocked in Sydney Stein with an RBI triple, but the Goshen College softball team dropped a doubleheader to Grace by 3-2 and 7-0 scores Saturday afternoon.
The Maple Leafs (6-8, 3-5 CL) put runners on base in three separate innings of the opener but gave up two runs in the second inning, two more in the third and three in the sixth. Lancer starter Chandler Elliott went the distance in the circle and struck out four while allowing one hit.
Hannah Herbster and Kati Gregory led Grace with three hits each while Herbster and Elliott rapped doubles.
Neither team scored more than one run in an inning in the second game, and while Goshen had all three extra-base hits, Grace (11-12, 4-4) came away with one more run. The Lancers opened the scoring in the second inning with three singles and a bases-loaded walk to Olivia Scarborough, then added to its advantage in the third on a leadoff walk, a steal and two groundouts.
Goshen got one run back in the top of the fourth on Maes' triple before Grace added an insurance run on a Clarissa Knight single in the bottom of the fifth.
Candace Sutter led off the sixth with a double for the visitors; after a strikeout, she would come home on a Sandra Rodriguez one-out single that saw Rodriguez take second on a fielding error. With the tying run on second, however, Grace reliever Hannah England retired the final five Goshen batters to close out the game.
Erin Lawhon got the win for the Lancers after starting the game and allowing three hits while striking out five: Goshen starter Alexis Carpenter also went five innings, allowing five hits.
Goshen returns to action with four games in two games to start the week, hosting Spring Arbor in a makeup game at 3 p.m. Monday before visiting Huntington at the same time Tuesday.
