Box Score 2 GOSHEN, Ind. — Alexis Carpenter no-hit Spring Arbor University through 4 2/3 innings and Sydney Stein homered in the third inning of game two, but the chance for a doubleheader split slipped through the hands of the Goshen College softball team Monday as the Maple Leafs lost 2-1 and 9-4 in a makeup Crossroads League doubleheader at GC's John Ingold Athletic Complex.
Liz Campeau knocked in a pair of runs with a two-out single in the sixth for SAU (11-15, 5-5). After a pair of walks in the bottom of the inning, Brooke Maes laced a two-out double off the wall to score pinch-runner Brianna Sherman and bring Goshen (6-10, 3-7) within 2-1. With the tying and go-ahead runs on base, however, a lineout ended the inning.
The Maple Leafs took a 3-0 lead after two innings in the nightcap with Candace Sutter capping the rally with an RBI single. Sydney Stein's fourth home run of the season in the third inning made the score 4-0, where it stood until the sixth as Maes retired seven straight batters.
SAU scored all of their runs in the ninth inning on seven hits, three walks and a fielding error, as 14 batters came to the plate. Sydney Taylor capped the rally with grand slam to make it 8-4.
The offensive spurt earned Lauren Heath the win after throwing 4 2/3 innings of two-hit relief with five strikeouts. Maes allowed five hits in her first six shutout innings for Goshen.
Taylor was one of four Cougars to post two hits in game two: Allison White also reached twice to lead the Leafs.
Goshen visits Huntington for a doubleheader at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
