Box Score MOUNT VERNON, Ohio — Nate Nussbaum scored for Goshen College, but Mount Vernon Nazarene University used a pair of first-half goals to top the Maple Leafs 2-1 Saturday afternoon in Crossroads League men's soccer at Cougar Field.
The Cougars scored both of their goals on rebounds, getting a Logan Thompson follow-up when Tim Kasparek hit the post in the 12th minute to take a 1-0 lead before Rene Diaz finished off Samuel Dimas' header with 5:35 to play before halftime.
Spencer Aeschliman assisted on the Maple Leaf goal, which came 19:58 before the end of regulation. Goshen took five shots after the goal in attempts to tie the match, in addition to a pair of corner kicks over the final three minutes.
GC nearly doubled Mount Vernon Nazarene's shot total for the match, getting off 21 attempts to the Cougars' 11, and put 12 shots on goal while allowing 4.
Nussbaum led all players with 7 shots on goal, including 3 on target; teammate Stuart Aeschliman added 5 and 2 respectively. Tomas Fonseca made 2 saves for the Maple Leafs (7-8-2, 2-4-2) and Joshua Dunn made 11 for the Cougars (8-6-3, 3-3-2).
Goshen posted a 10-8 edge in shots over the first half, extending that to 11-4 after halftime. The Maple Leafs also took 6 of the match's 7 corner kicks.
With the defeat, Goshen sits in a tie with Indiana Wesleyan for eighth place in the Crossroads League, setting up a winner-take-all match with IWU for a postseason berth on Wednesday night.
