MOUNT VERNON, Ohio — While a pair of hits from Katherine Boyer and Sandra Rodriguez along with another Alexis Carpenter complete game highlighted Goshen College's softball doubleheader at Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Monday, the Cougars claimed both games by margins of 4-1 and 8-0.

Rodriguez recorded a pair of singles in the opener for the Maple Leafs (9-18, 1-7 Crossroads League) while Boyer recorded her second triple of the year in the first game and a single in the second game. Carpenter went the distance in the lid-lifter, allowing nine baserunners in six innings but giving up just two earned runs.

Center fielder Maddie Johnston was the only player with multiple hits in game one for the Cougars (14-4, 6-0), who also had designated player Sarah Boue' reach base via hit and via the game's only walk. The two batters combined for the game's first run in the second inning when Johnston's single knocked in Boue': Johnston also drove in Boue' with a groundout in the fourth before Samantha Collier doubled to score an insurance run one batter later.

Goshen got on the board in the sixth after a leadoff double from Rianna Koteles: Boyer moved the runner to third base with a groundout before Rodriguez's second hit of the day found the hole on the right side of the infield.

Anna Boue' took the win for MVNU after scattering six hits in seven innings: while the Maple Leafs had runners on base in five of the seven frames, Boue' only gave up multiple hits in one inning.

Sarah Boue' gave MVNU another complete-game performance in the second game, throwing 55 pitches in a six-inning start shortened by the run rule. Leah Herrman started and pitched the first 4 2/3 innings for GC, giving up one run through the first four frames.

MVNU finished with 13 hits, including six for extra bases, Johnston rapping a game-high four singles. Alyson Adams and Savannah Richards each drove in two runs apiece while Johnston and Jennifer Kurelic scored twice. The Cougars scored three times on two hits in the fifth inning before adding four runs to trigger the eight-run clause in the sixth.

Goshen continues its eight-game week on Tuesday when the Maple Leafs host Bethel College in a conference doubleheader at the John Ingold Athletic Complex. First pitch is set for 3 p.m., weather permitting.
