Pair Of Homers Come Up Short As Taylor Sweeps GC

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GOSHEN, Ind. — Sandra Rodriguez and Leah Herrman each recorded solo homers for the Goshen College softball team, but Taylor University swept the Maple Leafs 8-0 and 7-4 in a Crossroads League doubleheader Friday at the John Ingold Athletic Complex.

Despite rapping 12 hits in the nightcap, Goshen (14-27-1, 6-16-1) was unable to come back from a three-run Taylor fifth with an insurance run in the top of the sixth. The Trojans (20-10, 14-8) put up five runs in the third inning of game one to start the ball rolling on the afternoon.

Courtney Moriarty doubled three times for Taylor in the opener while Erin Cozad added a pair of home runs. Taylor Wilson drove in three runs while Moriarty and Lauren Kanai combined on a three-hit, 97-pitch shutout from the circle.

Goshen had its best scoring chance right off the bat after Cassandra Espinoza led off the first inning with a walk. Rianna Koteles bunted her to second and Rodriguez added a two-out single to put runners on the corners before a flyout ended the inning. The Maple Leafs also put two runners on base in the fourth, when Rodriguez's single was followed by a pitch off Courtney Crapser's elbow, but again Taylor emerged unscathed.

Cozad's first homer capped a seven-hit third inning for TU while her second made the score 7-0 after five; Cassie Kuizin's solo shot became the run that triggered the run rule after six innings.

Each team put runners on base in six of seven innings in game two, a matchup that saw the teams combine for 25 hits and 17 runners left aboard.

GC got on the board in the second inning as Herrman's leadoff single gave way to hits from Brooke Maes and Allison White with one away. Candace Sutter worked a walk to load the bases before a pair of hard ground balls found infielders' gloves to end the inning.

Taylor replied with two runs, one of which was earned, in the third before Rodriguez tied the score three pitches into the bottom of the inning with a line drive that narrowly missed hitting the center-field flagpole. Katherine Boyer, Herrman and Maes all singled later in the inning to put the hosts up 3-2 with one out: again, the Maple Leafs made solid contact to end the inning on a Sutter line drive to short.

Cozad crossed the plate to tie the score on a Kara Tucker single in the fourth, and while Goshen started the bottom of the inning off with two singles, the Maple Leafs would never lead again. Six of the first seven Trojans reached base in the fifth, with the exception being a Kanai sacrifice bunt to move two runners into scoring position, as the visitors pulled in front 6-3.

The teams traded solo homers one more time, with Herrman going yard to left field four pitches into the GC fifth and Davis Carter connecting for an eerily similar blast with one out in the Trojan sixth. From that point forward, though, the only hit was Espinoza's bunt in the bottom of the sixth.

Herrman went 3 for 4 to pace the Maple Leafs, scoring twice, while Espinoza joined Rodriguez and Maes with two hits. Taylor got three hits from Carter, whose homer was the Trojans' lone extra-base knock. Tucker, Cozad and Olivia Hostetler all had two hits while Hannah Castor walked twice and Carter drove in two runs.

After Taylor made two pitching changes before the first out of the third, Jessica Doctor worked four innings in relief to get the win: Kanai used nine pitches for a perfect seventh inning and a save. Alexis Carpenter went 4 1/3 innings and Maes 2 2/3 for GC.

Goshen continues its string of four doubleheaders in as many days on Saturday when the Maple Leafs visit Gardner Field in Mishawaka to face Bethel. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
