Maes Ties Homer Mark With Two Home Games To Spare

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GOSHEN, Ind. — Goshen College senior Brooke Maes tied the Maple Leafs' career home-run record Monday with her 18th career round-tripper as Indiana Wesleyan University swept Goshen 12-0 and 6-2 in a softball doubleheader at the John Ingold Athletic Complex.

Maes cleared the left-field fence just inside the foul pole with two balls, two strikes and two outs in the bottom of the second inning of game two. In addition to pulling the Northridge High School graduate level with 2002 graduate Candy Feare, the blast also tied the score at 1.

Maes was 1 for 2 with a walk in the nightcap for the Maple Leafs (15-32-1, 7-21-1 Crossroads League) after drawing a free pass in the opener to extend her career total to 60, also a Goshen College record. She also ranks third at GC with 91 runs batted in, fourth with 90 runs scored, fifth with 149 hits and fifth with 29 doubles.

NAIA no. 11 Indiana Wesleyan (43-8, 24-6) re-took the lead with a single and two doubles in the third inning before getting a run-scoring single from Michaela Loveless in the third and a two-run Sydney Lowe homer in the seventh. The Maple Leafs picked up a second tally on a Courtney Crapser single to left in the sixth.

Sandra Rodriguez paced the Maple Leaf offense with a pair of singles in game two: Rayna Moraga and Taylor Sutliff each added one. Moraga started and pitched 3 1/3 innings, allowing five runs, before Maes gave up six hits and a run over the final 3 2/3 frames.

The Wildcats burst out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning of game one and went on to win 12-0 in five innings. Victoria Boyer and Rebecca Schrad each recorded two hits, with Schrad's solo shot in the fifth rounding out the scoring.

Rianna Koteles scored a hit, Maes a walk and Sutliff a sacrifice for the Maple Leafs, who got four innings of relief with one earned run from Hannah Grimes.

Indiana Wesleyan, which used all but five players on the roster in the opener, got three innings and seven strikeouts from pitcher Carlie Weaver. Madison Cooksey and Shannon Arndt finished the game out in the circle.

Despite the pair of losses, Goshen moved closer to clinching its first Crossroads League tournament berth since 2013 as ninth-place Grace was swept by Indiana Wesleyan. The Maple Leafs' magic number to claim a bid to next week's eight-team event is 7, meaning the team could clinch as soon as Saturday at Grace.

Goshen takes the next three days off for final exams before returning to the field to close out the regular season with six games in four days beginning this weekend. The first twinbill of that span is also the team's Senior Day, with first pitch set for 3 p.m. Friday against Spring Arbor.
