Box Score GOSHEN, Ind. — The fourth time was the charm Thursday night as the Goshen College men's volleyball team won its first match as a varsity program with a sweep of Robert Morris University in Gunden Gymnasium.
Alexander Rabadzhiev paced the Maple Leafs (1-3) with 11 kills and the Maple Leafs forced their guests into more than 40 errors in the 25-21, 25-20, 25-22 win.
Goshen racked up season highs with 5 blocks and 5 aces in the match and hit .158 or better in all three sets. The Eagles (0-1) finished with 39 kills and a .165 hitting percentage, but gave away at least 7 points in each set to hitting errors.
The Maple Leafs started things off on the right foot, taking six of the first eight points, before a six-point RMU run put the visitors up 12-9 and prompted a Goshen timeout. Michael Wahl and Rabadzhiev combined for three kills on a four-point GC spurt that was part of a 9-2 Maple Leaf run to retain control, allowing Goshen to lead by as many as six points in the opening stanza.
Robert Morris grabbed the early lead with a Bobby Ying ace in the second set, but the kill on the next point to make it 3-1 was the second-to-last point the Eagles would earn off their own serve. Goshen answered with four of the next five points for a 5-4 lead and never trailed again in the set, eventually going up 11-7 on a three-point run served by libero Isaac Longenecker. Rabadzhiev, Elias Baer and Lucas Sauder all added kills as GC led by at least three points for the entire second half of the set.
GC finished the match on a 5-2 run, getting blocks from Sauder, Rabadzhiev and Christian Rodriguez, to conceal the 6-1 spurt that brought the Eagles level in the set after the Maple Leafs doubled them up with a 12-6 lead. Rabadzhiev, Baer and Bennett all had kills as the hosts broke open an early 3-3 tie; Rabadzhiev finished the set with four winners.
Manny Andrade led all players with 16 kills and 9 digs for Robert Morris, which got a match-high 30 assists from Bobby Ying. John Wazydrag added 4 blocks, one more than teammates Andrade and Joe Claffy.
Michael Wahl paced the Maple Leafs with 18 assists while Rodriguez and Baer added 7 digs apiece. Sauder led the team with 2 aces, which was one shy of Ying's 3 for the match high, but Goshen accumulated 6 serving errors against Robert Morris' 19. Bennett and Baer blocked two attacks apiece.
