Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3

ELGIN, Ill. — The Goshen College men's volleyball team snapped a three-match losing streak with its first-ever fifth-set win Saturday afternoon, topping Robert Morris University 15-11 to cap off a three-match weekend at the Judson University Early Bird Tournament.

The Maple Leafs (2-6) racked up 22 points or more four times in the weekend's first seven stanzas, but couldn't get over the hump as they dropped their first two matches to Judson and Mount Mercy. The scheduled Friday match with Aquinas, which was to have served as the tournament opener for both schools, was canceled because the teams are conference opponents.

FRIDAY: Judson 3, Goshen 0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-22) (Box Score)

Javier Arreguin racked up 13 kills without an error and Chase Erwin added 10 kills as Judson hit .423 and sent the Maple Leafs to defeat in straight sets. The Eagles used two four-point runs in each of the first two sets to take control of the match before taking five of the last seven points in the third set to finish things off.

Alexander Rabadzhiev matched the match high with 13 kills and Michael Wahl finished with 20 assists for Goshen. Judson got 39 helpers from Tony Tauiliili to lead all players, and the hitters won out over the blockers on both sides as there were only 3 blocks in the match.

Wahl recorded 6 digs and Nick Yutzy 5 to pace the Maple Leafs.

FRIDAY: Mount Mercy 3, Goshen 0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-22) (Box Score)

The Maple Leafs posted 5 blocks, their second-best mark of the season, in defeat after getting 3 stuffs from Lucas Sauder and 2 each from Wahl and Andy Bennett. Rabadzhiev led all players in kills, getting 13 for the second straight match, and Christian Rodriguez contributed 8.

What Mount Mercy lacked in individual eye-popping numbers, it made up for in consistency: no Mustang had more than 8 kills, but five racked up at least 6, and three players added at least five digs. The team's 6 aces were split three ways. Andrew Colatone led the team with three blocks, including a solo, and Jaime Araiza had 23 assists.

Goshen took an early 8-4 lead behind two Rodriguez winners and a Bennett ace, but Mount Mercy got a pair of four-point runs later in the set and led by as many as 4. Three Ben Steffen winners gave the Mustangs the second-set lead, and Goshen reeled off six straight points in the third set before MMU took eight of the final 10 to win the match.

SATURDAY: Goshen 3, Robert Morris 2 (23-25, 25-22, 18-22, 25-21, 15-11) (Box Score)

GC found the win column behind 9 total blocks, with three players involved in four apiece, and a display of consistency over power: while Robert Morris had more kills than Goshen in all five sets, the Eagles also had more errors in four of the five periods. Manny Andrade's match-high 17 kills paced four Robert Morris players in double figures, but three Eagles racked up 7 errors or more and RMU finished with 23 service miscues.

Rodriguez added a pair of aces for Goshen, which got 13 kills from Rabadzhiev for the third straight match and 11 winners from Wahl. Sauder picked up a career-high 27 aces and Bennett, Wahl and Rodriguez got in on 4 stuffs each. Yutzy led the team with 9 digs.

The Maple Leafs took seven of the first nine points and led by as many as 7 before the Eagles answered with nine straight points and led throughout the second half of the first set. The second stanza was tied 17 times among the first 20 chances before GC won five of the last seven points to level the match. Finally, the third set went the way of the Eagles behind three four-point runs and 6 kills from Bobby Ying.

Goshen led by three points once and two points twice early in the fourth set, only to see RMU claw level all three times. A four-point run saw the Eagles lead by as many as 3 before a Rabadzhiev winner and a Rodriguez ace put Goshen up 17-15, but RMU answered with four of the next five points and led 19-18.

After three alternating errors left the score 20-all, Goshen found the run it needed on Yutzy's serve. An ace, a Christian Gehman kill and two attack errors got the Leafs within two points of leveling the match and two more attack errors finished the set on Gehman's serve.

The Eagles took an early lead in the deciding set, getting three kills in the first four points, before Goshen responded with five straight points and a 10-7 lead. All told, a 10-4 Maple Leaf run sealed off the win: Wahl and Rabadzhiev each had kills and Bennett chipped in an assist on the final block.

Up Next: Goshen returns to the friendly confines of Gunden Gymnasium on Thursday to square off with Trinity Christian College in the second of five straight matches against schools from Illinois. First serve is set for 7 p.m. EST.
