Tight sets still lead to defeat at Lawrence Tech

Box Score

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. — Christian Rodriguez recorded a season-high 10 kills Saturday afternoon, but Lawrence Technological University won a pair of sets by the slimmest of margins and swept the Goshen College men's volleyball team 25-20, 25-23 and 27-25 in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference action at the Don Ridler Field House.

Joseph Balanda led the Blue Devils (10-10, 2-3) with 10 kills while Calvin Ooms had 9. Gospel Sua added 25 assists. Balanda's 6 blocks were also a match high.

Alexander Rabadzhiev led all players with 14 kills and 12 digs for the Maple Leafs (4-13, 0-4). Lucas Sauder paced all players with 30 assists and Michael Wahl added 8 winners, but Goshen also accumulated 25 hitting errors.

The Blue Devils led for the bulk of the first set, with the last tie coming at 2-all, before Goshen took three straight points to open a 7-2 second-stanza lead. Lawrence Tech responded with four points to take another lead at 12-11, only for Goshen to do the same and make it 15-13.

After ties at 20, 22 and 23, Joseph Eckert fired the winner on one point and served the next as Lawrence Tech took a 2-0 set lead.

Goshen used a 5-point run sparked by kills from Rabadzhiev and Wahl to lead 11-9 midway through the third set, and the Maple Leafs led by 4 as late as 16-12. The home team pulled back in front at 23-22 on the second of back-to-back Ooms spikes before GC saved three match points, the second on Rabadzhiev's ace. A fourth match point proved too much, though, as a Maple Leaf attack error closed out the contest.

Goshen is back in action Monday evening at Cincinnati Christian University, a 7 p.m. first serve, before squaring off with Adrian College in a doubleheader at 6 and 8 p.m. on Wednesday in Gunden Gymnasium.
