Box Score 2 UPLAND, Ind. — Taylor University's two first-inning runs made the difference Wednesday evening, even as the Goshen College softball team brought the tying run to the plate in four of the remaining six innings before the Maple Leafs dropped a 2-0 Crossroads League decision at Gudakunst Field.
The Trojans (8-3) won their Crossroads League opener after a one-out single from Kara Tucker and a walk to Lauren Kanai. A ground ball to third drove in both runs on a fielding error as the hosts took the lead.
Goshen had its best chance to pull ahead an inning later as Leah Herrman reached on an error before infield hits by Taylor Sutliff and Katherine Boyer loaded the bases with two outs. GC put a runner in scoring position in the third inning as well, but in both cases, a flyout ended the offensive threat.
Jessica Doctor and Darby Shaw combined for the shutout, with Doctor giving up 4 hits in 5 innings and Shaw allowing one single in 2 innings. Herrman pitched a 3-hit complete game for the Maple Leafs (6-13). All eight hits in the game were singles and no player had more than one.
The second game of the doubleheader was called because of rain. Per conference policy, the game will be resumed from the point of stoppage before the teams' scheduled doubleheader April 6 at the John Ingold Athletic Complex. The statistics from game two will not be entered into either team's totals until the game is completed.
Goshen returns to action Saturday, making the longest road trip of its conference season to cap its league-opening six-game road trip with a visit to Mount Vernon Nazarene University. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. in Mount Vernon, Ohio.
