Maple Leafs fall to sixth-ranked Aquinas

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The Goshen College men's volleyball team was upended by sixth-ranked Aquinas College in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference match Wednesday night at Aquinas. The Saints won 25-19, 25-16, 25-22.

Aquinas (19-1, 5-1) got more than two-thirds of its 75 points on kills, putting down 52 winners including 20 from Joshua Boothroy and 8 from Sean Kelley. Colby Elder posted 40 assists and 7 aces to lead all players in both categories.

Goshen (5-16, 0-5) picked up 8 kills from Alexander Rabadzhiev and 15 assists from Michael Wahl. Rabadzhiev led all players with 3 aces, becoming the only player on either team with more than one, and paced the Maple Leafs with 2 blocks,

The Saints hit .418 in the match and hit at at least a .367 clip in all three sets. Goshen kept up with a .292 hitting percentage in the opening stanza, but did so on 9 fewer attempts.

Aquinas led throughout the first set, with Goshen taking its first lead at 6-5 of the second before Aquinas reeled off 7 points in a row. The third set featured 12 ties with all but one of them between 6-all and 16-all; the Saints took four straight points on Elder's serve to take a 21-19 lead. Elder was involved as the server or the setter on seven of Aquinas's last eight points.

Goshen is idle for more than a week before playing four times at the Siena Heights University tournament on March 16 and 17.
