MISHAWAKA, Ind. — Allison White, Leah Herrman and Katherine Boyer all homered Saturday afternoon as the Goshen College softball team topped Bethel College 6-3 at Gardner Field on the BC campus. While the Maple Leafs rallied to take a 4-3 lead in game two, the Pilots laughed last with a 5-4 walkoff win to split the doubleheader.

The victory in the opener was Goshen's 11th of the Crossroads League season, tying a program record set in 2002.

White started the scoring in the second inning of the first game, lashing a 3-run shot to left to score Boyer and Taylor Sutliff. Three innings later, Herrman left the yard for the second time in as many days, driving in Cassandra Espinoza before Boyer went back-to-back with a solo shot to make it 6-0.

The Pilots (13-29, 8-22) added two unearned runs while scoring three overall in the home half of the inning, using three singles and a pair of errors to cut the lead in half. A hit batter and a fielder's choice loaded the bases to bring the tying run to the plate, but Hannah Grimes posted a strikeout to get out of the inning.

Ri Koteles, who had Goshen's lone double, posted two hits to lead the Maple Leafs along with Herrman and Sandra Rodriguez. Boyer was the only player to score twice. Right fielder Maribelle Castro added two singles for the hosts.

Goshen (17-28, 11-18) used three pitchers to get the win: Emily Cummings started and pitched two innings, Grimes worked the middle three and Mad Kuipers threw the last two for the save.

Pilot starter Brooke Stoltz took a perfect game into the sixth inning of game two. Her teammates backed her up early, scoring once in the first inning and twice in the second on doubles by Haley Stinson and Quinn Slattman respectively.

Once Rodriguez broke up the perfect game with a single leading off the sixth, the shutout would be gone in four batters and the lead in five. Rodriguez was promptly erased by a double play, but White was hit with a pitch and Edith Vega doubled her home to put Goshen on the scoreboard. Jessica Bachtell homered two pitches later, taking the score from 3-0 to 3-3 in the span of three pitches.

GC took the lead without a hit in the seventh following leadoff walks to Herrman and Boyer. Pinch-runner Jaelyn Rufenacht led a double steal to move both runners into scoring position and later scored on White's sacrifice fly.

In a remarkably similar half-inning, Bethel started the bottom of the seventh with a hit batter and an infield single before Hannah Darling uncorked the game-winning hit with one out.

The Pilots finished with 8 hits to Goshen's 4, getting two hits apiece from Slattman, Stinson and Morgan Riley. Koteles added two bases on balls. The run-scoring hits were the only extra-base knocks in either direction.

Danica Mast got the win in relief for Bethel: Herrman would have earned the victory and Rayna Moraga the save had the Leafs held on.

With the split, the Maple Leafs held on to sixth place in the Crossroads League standings. The rest of the conference schedule was rained out Saturday.

Goshen concludes its four-game road trip Monday at Marian University in a doubleheader that was moved up from Tuesday to avoid final exams. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
