Goshen drops twinbill to third-ranked Marian

INDIANAPOLIS — Marian University swept a Crossroads League doubleheader from Goshen College on Monday as the third-ranked team in the nation won 9-1 and 9-0 in a pair of five-inning contests.

The Knights (42-0) posted a seven-run third inning in the opener and a six-run second in the nightcap to break each game open.

Goshen (17-30) scored its lone run in the third inning of game one, getting a leadoff baserunner when Hayley Courtney was hit by a pitch. She moved to second base on an infield single by Jessica Bachtell before the run scored on a passed ball.

Courtney also added a hit in game two, which saw Ri Koteles double for the Maple Leafs. Allison White contributed a stolen base.

Maddie Bombei, Olivia Hoffman and Sadie Baugh each had multi-hit games for the Knights.

Goshen is off until Friday due to final exams, which also provided the rationale for moving the Marian doubleheader ahead from Tuesday to Monday. The Maple Leafs will celebrate their seniors before a doubleheader with Spring Arbor at 1 p.m. Frida; the earlier-than-usual start will also allow for the completion of a game that was suspended earlier in April.
