Box Score 2 GOSHEN, Ind. — The Goshen College softball team is headed to the postseason for the first time since 2013 after a 4-0 win over Spring Arbor University to start a Senior Day split on Friday at the John Ingold Athletic Complex. Spring Arbor won the second game 8-5 and finished the day with a 12-11 win in the completion of a suspended game.
Emily Cummings pitched a complete-game 3-hitter in the opener, not allowing a fly ball to the outfield until the fourth inning while striking out 7 batters. She added a pair of doubles at the plate as one of a trio of Maple Leafs with 2 hits.
Goshen (18-32, 12-22) opened the scoring when Ri Koteles was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the first inning and doubled its lead two batters later on a bases-loaded walk to Katherine Boyer. Cummings doubled in Edith Vega to make it 2-0 through three frames and Allison White added an RBI fielder's choice in the bottom of the third.
Vega and Jessica Bachtell each recorded a pair of singles for Goshen.
Spring Arbor (19-27, 12-22) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the second game and never trailed, although Goshen tied the score on singles by Sandra Rodriguez and Cassandra Espinoza in the bottom of the third inning. The Cougars retaliated with three runs in their half of the fourth to take a 5-2 lead and added a 3-run sixth to finish the damage.
Taylor Sutliff went 3 for 3 in her final home contest to lead Goshen's offense: Cummings added a pair of hits and Rodriguez doubled, as did Allison White. Leah Herrman started and Mad Kuipers added 2 innings of hitless relief.
Cora Millay, Chloe Gignac and Brookelyn Stafford each recorded 2 hits for SAU, with Gignac posting the lone double. Melody Donovan pitched the complete game for the win.
The teams combined for 31 hits in the nightcap, the completion of a game that was called because of darkness when the two teams met April 8 at Spring Arbor's campus.
The Cougars plated 6 runs after play resumed in the bottom of the fifth inning, taking an 8-3 lead, before Goshen got 2 back on hits by Cummings and Espinoza in the fifth.
Goshen flipped the lead back to its favor with a 6-run fifth that started with five straight hits: Madison Matthews, Bachtell and Cummings recorded three straight run-scoring hits before Koteles uncorked a 3-run homer to center field for an 11-8 lead.
Spring Arbor had an answer in the bottom of the inning, getting a leadoff single from Stafford before two doubles plated three runs to tie the score. Another leadoff single in the bottom of the seventh set the stage for Millay to drive in the winning run with one out.
Bachtell paced the Maple Leafs with 4 hits and 4 runs scored in 5 at bats, also driving in a run. Koteles knocked in a game-high 5 runs with a homer and a double, joining Matthews and Cummings with 2 hits apiece.
Spring Arbor, which finished with 16 hits to Goshen's 15, got six multi-hit games: Gignac and Hope Longenbarger each had three hits, with Longenbarger posting two of the five doubles. Kyla Semones scored three runs and Lauren Wirgau took the win in relief.
The opening victory was Goshen's 12th win of the conference season, eclipsing the program record of 11 set in 2001. Spring Arbor also finished the day with 12 wins, although Goshen holds the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Cougars with more runs scored in the four head-to-head meetings.
Goshen and Spring Arbor enter the final Saturday of the conference season tied for seventh in the CL standings, one game behind Huntington for the sixth seed. Goshen also holds the tiebreaker over Huntington, having won three out of four games head to head, while the Foresters have the tiebreaker over SAU.
GC is scheduled to close out the regular season Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Grace College. Stay tuned to GoLeafs.net for any further developments.
