Box Score 2 GOSHEN, Ind. — Cassandra Espinoza's two-run homer put the Goshen College softball team ahead in the second game and Emily Cummings singled to make it stick after pitching a shutout in the opener as the Maple Leafs topped Grace College 6-0 and 4-2 on Tuesday at the John Ingold Athletic Complex.
The Maple Leafs (10-17, 4-7 Crossroads League) got on the scoreboard with their first hit of the day, a two-run double by Leah Herrman in the first inning of game one, and never trailed. GC added an insurance run on an error in the second and another one when Katherine Boyer homered in the fourth.
Boyer, Madison Matthews and Ri Koteles all doubled in a two-run sixth inning that set the final score; when the dust settled, the Maple Leafs actually had the run that would have triggered the run rule on second base when that inning ended.
While the offense had plenty of help to give her, Cummings needed very little of it; she scattered four singles and a double across seven innings and only let one runner get as far as third base. Natalie Klingberg, who recorded the double, was the only Lancer with multiple hits.
Boyer went 3 for 3 and scored 3 times to pace the Maple Leafs, who rapped seven doubles on the day. Koteles, Herrman and Boyer all doubled twice; in fact, the team had almost twice as many doubles as singles.
Cummings bounced back to get the save in the nightcap, entering in the sixth inning and setting down six of the seven hitters she faced after providing the go-ahead RBI in the bottom of the fifth. Jessica Bachtell added an insurance run on a wild pitch.
The Maple Leafs won game two on 5 hits, including a single and a double from Matthews. Cummings added a double and Boyer singled; while Bachtell had no hits, she led all players with two walks.
Rayna Moraga got the start and allowed 2 runs on 2 hits in 5 innings, striking out 3. While she delivered her last pitch in a tie game, she took the win thanks to GC's fifth-inning comeback.
Goshen continues its six-game homestand Thursday with a 3 p.m. visit from Huntington University.
