HUNTINGTON, Ind. — The Goshen College softball team bounced back from a game-one loss with a 6-run first inning in game two as it split a doubleheader at Huntington University on Tuesday, dropping the first game 10-5 before winning the second 10-1.

Huntington (11-19, 7-13) scored in all six of its times at bat in the opener, pushing across single runs in the first three frames. The Maple Leafs (14-22, 8-11) scored first, getting hits from Madison Matthews and Emily Cummings in the first inning, and added three scores to tie the game with a 4-hit inning in the top of the fifth.

The Foresters outscored Goshen 6-1 over the last two innings, putting up seven hits as they scored four times in the fifth and two in the sixth. GC added its run on a fielding error with two outs in the sixth.

The hosts finished the game with 15 hits to Goshen's 13, getting 4 hits from Paige Eichelberger and 3 from Marty Harris to go along with three 2-hit performances. Denaia Rice drove in three runs.

Cummings and Sandra Rodriguez each rapped three hits to lead Goshen, although it was Ri Koteles who had the team's only extra-base hit. Koteles and Madison Matthews both had 2 hits while Koteles and Leah Herrman drove in 2 runs apiece.

Goshen broke open the second game before Huntington had a chance to bat, taking a 4-0 lead on Herrman's 3-run homer with one out in the top of the first. Allison White added a 2-run single to make it 6-0 four batters later.

The Maple Leafs added an insurance run in the second on a Herrman single and pushed across three more in the third. Matthews doubled to deep left-center to score White, who had been hit by a pitch. Matthews later crossed the plate on a fielding error and Koteles singled to drive in Bachtell and push the lead to double digits.

Huntington scored an unearned run on Rozlynn Everhart's single to the left side with two outs in the fifth before Rayna Moraga got a popout to finish her complete-game 2-hitter in the pitching circle.

Moraga struck out five in the mercy-rule-shortened win. Matthews led the offense by going 4 for 4 while Herrman drove in 4. Bachtell scored a game-high 3 runs while joining Herrman with multiple hits.

Goshen wraps up a six-game road trip on Friday with a visit to the University of Saint Francis in Fort Wayne for a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
