Box Score INDIANAPOLIS — Jessica Bachtell broke the Goshen College single-season record for runs batted in after Ri Koteles, Taylor Sutliff and Sandra Rodriguez all doubled in a 3-run second inning, but the Maple Leaf softball team dropped an 8-3 decision to Taylor University on Wednesday in the opening round of the Crossroads League tournament at Marian University.
Sutliff drove in Koteles and Rodriguez drove in Sutliff as Goshen (19-33-1) jumped to an early lead in its first postseason appearance since 2013. After a walk and a hit batter loaded the bases, Bachtell singled through the right side for her 41st RBI of the season, breaking a Natalee Lewis record that had stood for 18 seasons.
All nine Maple Leaf hitters went to the plate in the second inning and Goshen took its edge into the third before Taylor (34-15) mounted its comeback.
The Trojans scored their first run without the benefit of a hit after a pair of walks and a wild pitch: Goshen starter Emily Cummings finished the second inning having thrown 9 straight no-hit innings going back to Saturday.
After a fielder's choice scored another run to cut the margin to 3-2, Taylor Wilson tripled into the right-center gap to give the NAIA's 27th-ranked team its first lead. Taylor led 5-3 after three innings.
Goshen put the tying run on base with no outs in the sixth inning after a Koteles single and a fielding error, but was unable to bring the runners in despite a pair of solid contacts. Taylor added three runs on as many hits in the bottom of the inning.
Bachtell and Koteles led the Maple Leafs with 2 hits apiece. Goshen outhit Taylor 7-6, but every hit after the second was a single. Emily Cummings pitched 5 1/3 innings and struck out 6.
Wilson was the lone Trojan with multiple hits, and she and Hannah Castor each drove in a pair. After Jessica Doctor ran into trouble in the second inning, Darby Shaw took the win in relief by throwing 6 innings while allowing 6 baserunners and striking out 7.
The loss drops Goshen into the losers bracket of the double-elimination event, where the sixth-seeded Maple Leafs will take on seventh-seeded Huntington at noon tomorrow. Mount Vernon Nazarene will play Spring Arbor in the other losers bracket game. The entire tournament is hosted by Marian University.
