Box Score GOSHEN, Ind. — The Elkhart County connection came through in the clutch Wednesday night as the Goshen College men's soccer team found the only goal it would need in the 39th minute of a 1-0 win over Lourdes University at the John Ingold Athletic Complex.
Goshen High School graduate Lucas Bontreger scored with 6:15 left in the half and the Maple Leaf defense held the Gray Wolves off the scoreboard the rest of the way through the win.
The Maple Leafs (1-4), who earned head coach Victor Newberg his first win as a four-year college coach, finished with 11 shots to Lourdes' 8 but more than doubled up their foes in shots on goal, posting a 7-3 edge in that category.
Connor Wyse was credited with his first career assist on the goal in addition to adding a shot on target. Bontreger led all players with three shots, all of which were on goal, while Henrique Eichenberger and Felipe Gallo recorded 2 attempts apiece.
Tomas Fonseca made 3 saves for GC while Lourdes (0-3) got 6 stops out of Jorge Mendoza. Farouk Amoo led Lourdes with 2 shots.
Each team finished the game with 11 fouls and two yellow cards; all four bookings came in the second half and two were simultaneous.
Goshen hits the road for its next two matches, visiting Roosevelt University on Saturday and Madonna University on Wednesday. The Maple Leafs and Lakers start the road trip at 5 p.m. EDT at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview, Illinois.
