Leafs get program's biggest margin of victory in rout of Lincoln

Box Score

GOSHEN, Ind. — Alexander Rabadzhiev finished with 16 kills, 4 aces and 4 blocks Monday night as the Goshen College men's volleyball team moved to 2-0 at home this season with a three-set win 25-11, 25-14 and 25-12 over Lincoln College at Gunden Gymnasium.

The Maple Leafs (2-2) limited the Lynx to 16 winners, 2 aces and no blocks in the 60-minute match; Goshen posted 37 kills against four hitting errors, accounting for almost exactly half of its points. Lincoln's 37 points were the fewest allowed by the Maple Leafs in program history.

Ian Fox had 5 kills and Andy Bennett added 4 to go along with 3 blocks apiece for GC, which got a match-high 20 assists from Michael Wahl and 8 from Lucas Sauder. Brayton Yoder, Elias Baer and Nick Yutzy all added aces.

Jonathan Lindner finished with 6 kills and Miguel Garcia had 13 assists for Lincoln (0-5). No other Lynx had more than 3 kills.

"This was a great team effort," said head coach Jim Daugherty. "Alex hit .750 with 16 kills -- it's hard to say more than the numbers already do there. We also had great team communication."

Goshen did not trail in either of the first two sets, racing to a 6-1 lead in the opener and limiting Lincoln to 1 kill in the set. The Maple Leafs reeled off a six-point run to stretch their lead to 19-7 in the opener, eventually finishing the set with a Rabadzhiev ace.

The second set was tied at the first five opportunities, but the Maple Leafs never trailed before breaking open a 12-10 set with a 7-1 run on kills from Rabadzhiev, Baer and Bennett. Bennett and Rabadzhiev added subsequent kills to extend the lead to two sets to none.

Lincoln took its first set lead of the match at 2-1, then 3-2, in the third set, but Goshen pulled back in front on kills by Rabadzhiev and Jack Paraha, and from there it was business as usual. Two service errors gave the Lynx points to close within 6-5, but a 10-2 Goshen run ended any thoughts of extending the match.

Goshen hit .583 in the first set, .591 in the second and .333 in the third.

The Maple Leafs are now idle until the weekend, when they will play a pair of matches at Campbellsville University in Kentucky. Goshen will take on the hosts, ranked second in the NAIA, at 7 p.m. Friday before playing Life University at 11 a.m. Saturday.
