Saint Francis overpowers Goshen in return to volleyball

Leafs fall in straight sets after 17-day layoff

GOSHEN, Ind. — The University of Saint Francis took control early and Goshen College never quite caught up Wednesday night in a Crossroads League women's volleyball match in GC's Gunden Gymnasium. The Cougars won 25-6, 25-20, 25-18.

Alexis Nelson led all players with 10 kills for Saint Francis (5-9, 5-9), which posted 40 winners to Goshen's 20. The Maple Leafs (0-11, 0-11) exactly canceled out their 20 winners with 20 hitting errors.

USF also got 31 assists and 5 aces, including 4 in the first set, from Maria Pelak. Nelson, Ellie Ferris and Shelby Mosier finished with 3 blocks apiece.

Madi Simmons paced the Maple Leafs with 13 assists to go with 6 digs. Christina Towne led the team with 9 digs and 5 kills, tying for the team lead with Amy Baca and Madison Coles in the latter category. Taylor Eash added a solo block.

USF raced through the first set, winning 13 points before their first rotation and holding GC to two points on its own serve. The Maple Leafs briefly led 2-1 in the second set before dropping four straight points. The hosts closed within two four times and pulled to within 17-16 on an attack error, but a 5-2 Cougar run re-opened a five-point lead.

The visitors opened 7-1 and 15-4 margins in the third set, allowing the Maple Leafs to finish on a high note by winning 14 of 22 rallies in the middle of the final stanza. At one point Goshen went on a 7-3 run with two Baca kills and a Brielle Agnew ace.

Goshen continues its impromptu three-match homestand on Friday when it hosts Huntington University in a makeup match from earlier in the fall. The meeting between the Maple Leafs and the Foresters is set for 7 p.m. and will double as Senior Night.
