GOSHEN, Ind. — Lucas Bontreger and Stuart Aeschliman hooked up for Goshen College's fifth game-tying goal of the season, but the go-ahead strike remained elusive in a 2-1 defeat to Huntington University on Saturday afternoon in King Stadium.
Pablo Garcia opened the scoring for Huntington in the 50th minute and Jordan Morris ended the game with the sudden-victory score after 9:28 of overtime.
Goshen (0-1-1), which was returning to the pitch after 16 days without a game, held an 11-2 edge in shots in the first half but was unable to capitalize. Aeschliman took a game-high 5 shots and Bontreger added 3 with each man putting 3 shots on target.
Huntington (4-0-2) mustered four shots on target during the game, with each coming from a different player. The Maple Leafs kept the Foresters away from the goal for more than 40 minutes until Reid Burton got a shot on frame with 3:50 left in the first half.
Gabe Greenfield made 4 saves in the first half for Huntington, including three in a 13-minute span on attempts from Bontreger, Chase Bratcher and Jose "Bebo" Villatoro. In that same period, Sven Badstieber missed an attempt high and Henrique Eichenberger saw his try miss the post as Goshen had a 6-0 edge in shots.
Goshen was credited with 2 saves during the match, both going to the team. Matias da Fonseca played the entire 99½ minutes in goal.
After Garcia's opener and Bontreger's equalizer, Goshen kept the pressure on and picked up a corner kick within two minutes. Neither team mustered another shot until the middle of the half and Huntington had a 4-1 edge in shots through the rest of regulation. GC's best chance at the led came right on 80 minutes, when a corner kick led Eichenberger to a shot that was stopped by Greenfield.
In the extra session, Aeschliman had his attempt saved in the 97th minute before a Goshen foul gave the ball back to Huntington. James Lighton's shot was saved on the other end with 80 seconds remaining before Lighton set up Morris for the game-winner.
Goshen took nine of the match's 12 corner kicks and finished with a 15-9 shot edge.
The Maple Leafs return to the pitch twice in the middle of next week as they seek to make up games that were postponed during their two-week hiatus. GC hosts Marian at 7 p.m. Tuesday and visits Grace at 7 p.m. Thursday.
