GOSHEN, Ind. — Robert Sanders scored 15 points, surpassing the career high he set on Saturday, and Michael Bowers led the Goshen College men's basketball team with 17 points Tuesday night in a 70-49 loss to Taylor University in Ruth Gunden Gymnasium.
CJ Penha and Jason Hubbard finished with 17 points and 16 points, respectively, for the Trojans, who improved to 2-0 in Crossroads League play. Vincent Miranda paced the team with 10 rebounds and 4 assists.
Phillip Hughes led GC with 9 rebounds, 7 of which came on the offensive glass. Tahj Curry finished with 3 assists.
Taylor took the lead 26 seconds after the opening tip and scored the first 7 points. Penha led all scorers with 14 points in the first half, accounting for almost a third of the Trojans' offense as they led 43-21 at the intermission.
Goshen (2-5, 0-1) outscored its foe 28-27 in the second half, closing the lead down to 14 with an 11-0 run just past the midway point of the second half. Taylor responded with 8 straight points to push the lead back above 20.
TU enjoyed a considerable shooting advantage, connecting at a 56 percent clip to Goshen's 29 percent. The Trojans, who also got 12 points from Jeff Clayton and 10 from James McCloud, turned the ball over 20 times but made up for it with a 35-26 rebounding margin.
Goshen stretched its rotation out to nine players, bringing freshmen Parker Sullivan and Quincy Mussio off the bench in the final minutes. Sullivan picked up an assist.
The Maple Leafs return to action after the Thanksgiving holiday against Indiana Tech in Fort Wayne. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. Saturday.
