Fast start, finish not enough against Taylor

Goshen scores 44 points in first, last quarters and 18 in other two

GOSHEN, Ind. — Janara Flowers led the Maple Leafs with 18 points and TaNiece Chapman recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds Tuesday night, but Taylor University used a substantial second- and third-quarter effort to top Goshen College 80-62 in a Thanksgiving Tuesday tussle at Ruth Gunden Gymnasium.

Graysen Cockerham pulled down 9 rebounds, including 5 in the first quarter, and Claire Rauck scored 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting, including 3 3-pointers, in her first appearance of the season.

Taylor got a game-high 32 points from Lauren James, who was 12-for-18 overall and 5-of-9 long-distance to go with a team-high 6 rebounds and 5 assists. The only thing that kept her from the trifecta of team leads was Madisyn Fischer's 6 assists and 3 steals.

The Trojans shot 48 percent to Goshen's 41 percent from the floor. Each team connected on 11 triples, combining to hoist an attempt every 41 seconds.

Goshen (0-4, 0-1) finished with a one-board edge on the glass, 33-32, but Taylor made up for it with 8 steals to the Maple Leafs' 2.

A fast-paced first quarter saw TU use a 9-0 run to lead by as many as eight, 19-11, before Goshen scored six of the last eight points to get back within 21-17. Another 8-0 run fleshed the lead out to as many as 18 in the second quarter. Taylor led 47-31 at halftime.

The defenses had their way in the third period, with Taylor scoring 12 points to Goshen's 4, and two of those four points came on free throws. The offenses won the fourth quarter, though, combining for 47 points in 10 minutes.

GC trailed by as many as 27 but got back within 71-57 on a Chapman score with 4:47 remaining.

The Maple Leafs are idle over the holiday weekend before hosting Indiana Wesleyan at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 2.
