FORT WAYNE, Ind. — Uriel Macias and Adhika Ezra each scored in the first half and the Goshen College men's soccer team held off a furious University of Saint Francis charge in extra time Wednesday night, leading the Maple Leafs and Cougars to a 2-2 draw at Bishop D'Arcy Stadium in each team's final match of the Crossroads League season.
Jacob Woodruff opened the scoring in the seventh minute and Josh Pedretti headed home a corner kick in the 20th, putting Goshen down more than one goal for just the second time all season. Macias and Ezra scored less than four minutes apart in the first half to level the score and neither team mustered a third goal in the final 65 minutes.
Macias opened Goshen's account with a second goal in three days, finishing a cross from Lucas Bontreger with six minutes left in the half before Ezra struck out of a goalmouth scramble with 2:36 to play. Bontreger was credited with Goshen's only assist of the game.
Goshen (0-4-3) outshot Saint Francis (6-5-2) 11-8 in regulation, though the Cougars had four of the match's six corners, all in the first half.
Neither team put a shot on target in the first 30 minutes of the second 45 before GC's Lucas Bontreger tested Caleb Spencer in the 72nd minute. Jose "Bebo" Villatoro missed a pair of shots, one wide and one high, in the last quarter hour.
Saint Francis outshot Goshen 8-1 in the two 10-minute overtime periods, which marked Goshen's fourth overtime game in seven chances. The extra session also got chippy, with four yellow cards and a red card dealt after the end of regulation for five separate incidents.
The match brought to a conclusion Goshen's 2020 Crossroads League season, which did not have time to reschedule the postponed matches against Mount Vernon Nazarene and Spring Arbor universities before the conference tournament begins on Saturday. With the Maple Leafs finishing 10th in the Crossroads League by winning percentage, they do not advance to the league tournament.
