GOSHEN, Ind. — Madison Coles finished the home portion of her junior season with a 10-kill showing Wednesday night, but the Goshen College women's volleyball team dropped a three-set decision 25-19, 25-14, 25-10 to Huntington University in Gunden Gymnasium.
Christina Towne led the Maple Leafs with 2 blocks and 10 digs, matching Coles and Taylor Eash in the former category. Brielle Agnew had a pair of aces and 8 digs from her sparkling new libero position.
Abby Robinson led Huntington (2-14, 2-13) with 9 kills to go along with 4 blocks. Brea Metz added 7 winners while Tya Bynum had 6 kills and 5 stuffs. Jennings Tacosik led all players with 4 aces, a category in which Huntington outpaced Goshen 12-3, and led her team with 18 assists.
Goshen (0-13) took a 9-4 lead in the first set behind a four- and a five-point run, the latter of which included both Agnew aces. The Foresters ripped off nine of the next 10 points, though, to open a 13-10 lead. The Maple Leafs came back to tie things at 13 and 14 before two Megan Horton aces sparked an 11-5 Forester run to close the set.
The visiting team never trailed in the second set, which was tied at 1 and as close as 10-8 before a five-point run opened things up. The Foresters used a pair of three-point spurts to double up Goshen at 21-10 before trading the last eight points.
In the third set, Nicole Flickinger served for 12 straight points as Huntington opened leads of 12-0, 15-2 and 18-4. Eash had an ace on her second-to-last serve in Gunden Gymnasium before the visitors won five of the last six rallies to close the deal.
GC plays the penultimate match of its fall season on Thursday when the Maple Leafs visit seventh-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Indiana, at Luckey Arena. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
