Box Score

GOSHEN, Ind. — Elias Baer led the Goshen College men's volleyball team with 10 digs and Alexander Rabadzhiev led all players with 15 kills Friday night, but Siena Heights University topped the Maple Leafs in three sets in a Valentine's Day match at Gunden Gymnasium.

The Saints (12-6, 3-1 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference) hit .248 with 45 winners in their 25-18, 25-19, 27-25 win, which extended their winning streak to nine matches after a 3-6 start to the season.

Kevin Gomez fired off 12 winners and Bryce Johnson had 10 while Emilier De Jesus led all players with 17 digs for Siena Heights. Keegan Crawford paced the team with 36 aces to go with 8 digs and Shevin Blades had a match-high 5 blocks.

Goshen (7-5, 2-2 WHAC) got 33 assists from Michael Wahl and 5 blocks apiece from Elias Baer and Andy Bennett. Wahl, Rabadzhiev and Ian Fox each had solo blocks as each team won 9 points stuffing their opponents at the net. Andy Bennett had the team's lone service ace.

The Maple Leafs posted 37 winners and a .144 hitting percentage, but also racked up 21 hitting errors in three sets of action. Rabadzhiev and Brayton Yoder each had 8 digs while Wahl and Jack Paraha finished with 6 apiece.

The Saints went on a 7-2 run for a 14-8 lead in the opening set, holding the Maple Leafs at bay by leading by at least three points the rest of the way. In the second set, GC took a 6-1 lead before SHU came back to tie things at 12, then ripped off a 6-0 run and never trailed again.

The third set was the tightest from start to finish as neither team led by more than five points. Goshen was the first team to take a four-point lead, the product of a 5-1 run that finished with an Andy Bennett kill at 13-9, and the teams traded points from there to 21-17.

The Saints got three straight points on Gomez winners to close within 23-21 before a pair of Maple Leaf errors tied the score at 24. Rabadzhiev's kill gave Goshen a set point, but two more errors and an Evan Cashen kill capped an 8-2 Siena Heights run to claim victory.

The Maple Leafs are now idle until next Thursday, when they kick off three consecutive days of matches by playing Robert Morris at 7 p.m. in Gunden Gymnasium.
