Goshen sweeps third straight match, tops LTU In return to WHAC play

Box Score

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. — Elias Baer put down 9 kills without an error, Michael Wahl recorded 3 aces and Andy Bennett posted a pair of blocks Saturday as Goshen College won its third straight volleyball match over Lawrence Technological University in three sets at the Don Ridler Field House.

Wahl paced the Maple Leafs with 20 assists and 7 digs, joined by Jack Paraha in the latter category, as Goshen picked up its third win in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference and 10th win of the season. Alexander Rabadzhiev led the team with 15 kills.

GC (10-5, 3-2) hit .778 with a single error in the first set, winning 25-17, before sweating out two-point wins at 29-27 and 25-23 in the last two sets. The 56-point second set was the longest in program history.

Lawrence Tech (3-8, 0-5) got 18 kills from Joshua Eckert and 8 from Max Jewett. Jacob Paige led the team with 25 assists and Jake Rajewski had 6 digs. Patrick Newell tied for the match high with 3 aces.

The Blue Devils hit at a .413 clip for the match, posting 37 kills on 75 swings, but Goshen outdid them to the tune of 43 winners and a .453 efficiency statistic. Neither team was charged with a ball-handling error.

"We played just well enough to win today," said GC head coach Jim Daugherty. "We hit very well as a team, but they were scrappy on defense and kept a lot of balls alive. We just kept hitting at them and hitting at them until something hit the ground. Our guys keep finding ways to win in these close sets. I'm proud of our effort and perseverance in these last three wins in three days."

GC broke open an 8-8 first set with a 6-2 run, then reeled off five points in a row to make it 22-15. In the second set, Lawrence Tech won nine out of 12 points to go up 18-12 before a five-point GC run tied things at 24. The Leafs had three set points for a 2-0 lead, but each time the Blue Devils stayed alive before a Baer ace.

The third set was tied at five of the first six chances before LTU took a 10-7 lead, only for Goshen to come back and level the score at 10 on a Rabadzhiev winner. After five more ties, back-to-back Bennett winners made it 18-16 in the visitors' favor. The Blue Devils never led again as GC finished the match on a Bennett kill and a block.

Goshen has two days off before playing four times in five nights next week, beginning with a visit to Indiana Tech in Fort Wayne at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
