Box Score GOSHEN, Ind. — Alexander Rabadzhiev racked up 18 kills, a season high for a 3-set match, Wednesday night as Goshen College swept Olivet College 25-23, 25-17, 25-13 in men's volleyball action at Gunden Gymnasium. The Maple Leafs hit better than .300 and never trailed in the third set as they vanquished their NCAA Division III foe.
Michael Wahl led Goshen (11-6) with 28 assists and 10 digs, Andy Bennett had a pair of blocks and Ian Fox and Elias Baer all finished with 5 kills apiece. Will Gaby, Joel Plank and Koby Harshbarger all had blocks in the third set and Plank and Lucas Sauder each finished with kills.
Aaron Smith and Brock Pringle each finished with 10 kills for Olivet (1-10), which got an 11-dig match high from Pringle and 27 assists from Jacob Kelly. The Comets had 35 kills, nearly matching Goshen's 38, but committed 20 hitting errors to GC's 11 and added 14 errors in the serving phase of the game as well.
Olivet raced to a 4-0 lead in the opening set before Goshen took six of eight rallies to tie the score at 6. The Maple Leafs pulled ahead on a pair of attack errors and led for much of the set, but kills by Pringle and Dan Hayes led the Comets to tie things at 22. Michael Wahl's block capped a 3-1 Leaf spurt to put the set in the win column.
The Maple Leafs went up 9-4 in the second set and never looked back, using a 5-0 run to make it 14-6 and leading by at least four the rest of the way. It was 6-2 and 14-7 in the third set as well, and the score reached 21-9 before head coach Jim Daugherty emptied the bench.
Goshen will have Thursday and Friday off for midterm break since the match scheduled Friday at Trine was canceled due to a scheduling conflict. GC now returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 29 at 7 p.m. when it hosts Judson University.
