Box Score GOSHEN, Ind. — Jack Paraha set a new career high with 16 kills and Alexander Rabadzhiev added a season-high 25 Saturday night as the Goshen College men's volleyball team registered its ninth win in 11 matches with a four-set victory over Judson University in Gunden Gymnasium.
Rabadzhiev finished with a double-double, posting 13 digs while coming up four winners short of his program record. Elias Baer led the team with 16 digs and Brayton Yoder chipped in 11 from his libero spot.
Michael Wahl missed a double-double by one dig, posting match-high 46 assists to go with 9 digs and 2 of Goshen's 3 aces, and Andy Bennett was a wall, coming up with 6 blocks to lead all players.
Paraha and Rabadzhiev both hit better than .300 as the Maple Leafs (12-6) came out with a .243 hitting percentage as a team.
Judson (6-17) got 14 kills from Nakuluai Morando and 11 from Brian Robinson, who hit .625 on 16 swings to lead all players in percentage. Tom Kurzynski led the Eagles in three different categories, coming up with 37 assists, 19 blocks and 3 aces.
Judson had 48 kills to Goshen's 54 and each team recorded 8 blocks.
"Tonight was an exciting match to watch," said head coach Jim Daugherty after the conclusion. "We struggled at times with our offensive rhythm, but Alexander played very well on both sides of the ball and Elias Baer played great defense. I am excited with the way the guys don't give up and keep fighting back when they fall behind."
Goshen never trailed in the first set, opening 5-2 and 13-6 leads on the way to a 25-20 win as they held the Eagles to a sub-zero hitting percentage. The Leafs briefly fell behind at 5-4 in the second set, but regained their footing and led all the way to 20-17 before the Eagles took a 6-1 leap into the end of the set behind two Robinson kills.
The third set continued Judson's newfound momentum, with the Eagles leading or tied until a 4-point Maple Leaf run made it 22-18. Two Paraha winners allowed Goshen to pull that set out of the fire, though, and go up two sets to one.
Goshen had the early run in the fourth set, pulling out four of the first five points, before the Eagles countered by winning four straight rallies to go up 13-10. The set was tied at every chance from 17-all to 24-all, but two Judson attack errors pushed the Maple Leafs across the finish line.
Goshen improves to 2-0 this season in four-set matches and 1-0 all-time on Leap Day.
The Maple Leafs have three days off before playing three times in four days next weekend. The team travels to Lincoln College in central Illinois for a 7 p.m. first serve on Wednesday night.
