SPRING ARBOR, Mich. — A scoreless first half was a good start for the Goshen College women's soccer team at Spring Arbor University on Saturday night, but the final score told a very different story as the 24th-ranked team in the NAIA blanked the Maple Leafs 7-0.
Katie Baer made 9 saves in the first half and 14 for the game before being lifted for backup Yesenia Cervantes Becerra, who made 4 saves in 21 minutes in her first collegiate action between the posts.
Litzy Corona led the Maple Leafs (0-2, 0-2 Crossroads League) with 2 shots.
Ariana Stoltzfus broke the ice for the Cougars (1-1-1, 1-1-1) when she scored 62 seconds after halftime, assisted by Mackenzie Selvius and Madison Marshall. Selvius scored her own goal 41 seconds later to double the lead.
Goshen's defense held out for almost 20 more minutes before Stoltzfus scored her second goal of the night with 23:51 remaining, followed by the first of two Madison Marshall strikes with 21:13 left.
Alyvia Thorne scored with 18:34 remaining before Lauren Marshall added a goal to her two assists 45 seconds later. Madison Marshall finished the scoring with 9:18 left.
The Cougars took all 11 of the game's corner kicks and 38 of the 40 shots. Goshen, conversely, had 18 of the 19 saves.
Madison Marshall led all players with 8 shots, one more than Maddy Wierda. Alicia Hall had 5 attempts and Selvius 4.
Goshen crosses over to the Cross Division of the Crossroads League for its next two matches, beginning with a visit to second-ranked Marian University on Wednesday. Kickoff is set for 7:30 at St. Vincent Health Field in Indianapolis.
