Marian shuts out Leafs despite double-digit save night

Baer registers another 10 saves in loss to #2 team in NAIA

INDIANAPOLIS — Allie Schlom scored once and assisted twice Wednesday night as second-ranked Marian University blanked Goshen College in a Crossroads League women's soccer match on the Knights' home pitch at St. Vincent Field.

Katie Baer had her third double-digit save day of the season, making 10 stops for the Maple Leafs (0-3, 0-3), who matched a season high with 3 shots.

Marian (6-0, 5-0) posted 33 shots and put 15 of those on target, led by Erin Oleksak with 9 and 5 respectively. Schlom added 7 shots and tested Baer three times.

The Knights, who also had all eight of the match's corner kicks, took seven shots before breaking through with 23:30 left in the first half on a Mackenzie Hall score. Three shots and 4:03 later, Allyson McAtamney doubled the lead on Schlom's first assist and it stood 2-0 at halftime.

Litzy Corona took two shots for GC and Naomi Richer had the first shot of her college career in the 68th minute.

The Knights got back on the scoreboard through Schlom with 30:24 left and she assisted a second time when Oleksak scored at the 25:01 mark. Siera Stuart added the final goal with 19:36 remaining.

Eight of Marian's 10 starting outfield players took shots, as did four of the 16 substitutes who entered the game. GC used a season-high 15 players.

Goshen hosts Huntington University on Saturday afternoon; the Maple Leafs' homecoming match is also the first time this season that Goshen will play a team that is not in the NAIA national rankings. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. at the John Ingold Athletic Complex.
