SPRING ARBOR, Mi. – The Cougars ended their three-game losing streak and beat the Maple Leafs in four sets on Wednesday night. Spring Arbor won the first two sets 25-18 and 25-16. Goshen took the third set 25-22 before the Cougars clinched it with a 25-20 victory in the fourth.
Most of the first set saw the Cougars (11-15) with a slim lead before a five-point run ended it and gave them a 25-18 win. In the second set, the Cougars went on a 10-1 run on their way to a 25-16 victory. They even started with a 4-0 lead in the third set before the Maple Leafs took over.
Goshen (3-25) scored six straight to take a 6-4 lead, but this was just a part of a larger 16-3 run that gave Goshen a 16-7 lead. Spring Arbor came back – getting within two points multiple times. However, the Maple Leafs held on for a 25-22 win in the third set.
In the fourth set, the Leafs never had the lead but were consistently within a few points the entire way. Spring Arbor hung on for a four-set victory, but Goshen played better in the last two sets. The Maple Leafs had 24 kills in the third and fourth sets combined compared to just seven in the first two sets. Their hitting percentage of .200 and .290 in the third and fourth sets respectively were much better than the prior two.
Goshen had seven total blocks in the match, with five of them coming from
Amy Baca. Baca's five blocks are a career-high for the sophomore from Akron, Indiana. Her previous best was three on September 22
nd at home against Grace.
The Maple Leafs have two home matches this weekend in the Ruth Gunden Gymnasium. Taylor comes to town for a 7:00 p.m. matchup on Friday. Then on Saturday at 3:00 p.m., Goshen will challenge Mount Vernon Nazarene.
