INDIANAPOLIS, IND – The Goshen and Marian men's soccer teams played a tight match that required overtime to settle it. But just a minute and eighteen seconds into the extra period, Marian wrapped it up with a 2-1 overtime victory.
The first half was scoreless for both teams. The Maple Leafs had the edge with five shots compared to just four for the home team. It would be a similar struggle in the second half, though each team had ten shots. No one had scored late into the game. That changed rapidly with eight minutes to go, however. Marian's Jalen Rice scored the first goal of the match from a pass by Axel Perez-Leon.
Just thirty seconds later, Goshen (5-8-3, 1-6-0 CL) answered.
Lucas Bontreger scored his seventh goal this season and the game was tied.
Henrique Eichenberger earned the assist. With that, the teams headed into overtime tied at one.
When it seemed like the whole game had been a struggle to put a ball in the back of the net for both teams, suddenly the goals came late in regulation. And it continued early in overtime when James Jenkins scored just over a minute in from a pass by David Green. Jenkins' golden goal ended the match with Marian (8-6-2, 4-3-0 CL) winning 2-1.
In the net,
Matias da Fonseca had five saves. Three of Goshen's eight shots on goal came from
Henrique Eichenberger, and two came from
Uriel Macias. Eichenberger and Bontreger each took four shots during the match. The teams finished the match with 15 shots each.
The Maple Leafs wrap up the season with two home games. The first is on Wednesday, October 27
th against Spring Arbor. Then on Saturday, October 30
th at 7:00, Goshen hosts Huntington.
