GOSHEN, Ind. — The Goshen College women's soccer team won its Homecoming Weekend match 1-0 for the second straight year when it blanked the University of Saint Francis on Saturday at the John Ingold Athletic Complex.
Paige Renshaw scored 6:04 into the contest when she stripped a USF defender at the back of the attacking third; several dribbles later, the scoreboard tallied Goshen's goal, and the Maple Leaf defense held the Cougars to four shots on goal to ensure that single score would be enough.
MaKiah McCain made four saves for Goshen, which moved back to .500 on the season at 5-5 and crept into a tie for fifth place in the Crossroads League standings. Amber Morgan made 9 stops and Melanie Xouris had 2 for USF (2-7-1, 0-3).
While the Cougars took the game's first corner kick in less than a minute and a half and followed that with a shot, GC would dominate the next 20 minutes, taking three shots and three corners before the visitors had a chance to do either of those things again. Brynja Rut Hjartardottir and Beatriz Meneghin each had shots on goal late in the first half.
Goshen continued to monopolize possession for much of the second half, giving up a shot in the 49th minute but not again until the 86th minute. From that point forward , things got a bit hairy as USF missed three shots in the last five minutes, then won a corner in the final seconds. Time expired with the ball in a goalmouth scrum: USF scored several seconds later but it was waved off.
Seja Lang led all players with 5 shots for GC: Anita Tavares, Meneghin and Hjartardottir each contributed 3 while Renshaw recorded 2. Cassidy McAfee, who came off the USF bench, was the only Cougar with more than one attempt.
Goshen hosts Bethel University at 7 p.m. Saturday in the U.S. Highway 20 Cup.
