Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Justin DeWeese

Goshen doubles Bethel’s shots on goal but can’t get U.S. Highway 20 Cup win

Bethel’s Esther Karhayu scores the match’s lone goal

GOSHEN, Ind. – The Maple Leafs had more shots and shots on goal than the Pilots, but it wasn't enough to get the rivalry victory. Esther Karhayu scored the only goal in the match in the 53rd minute and Bethel came out on top 1-0.

Goshen (5-6-0) had eight shots on goal whereas Bethel had just four. Additionally, the Maple Leafs led the total shots category 17-10. Goshen had opportunities and had four corner kicks in the second half to try to take advantage of. But Pilots goalkeeper Corryn Berlin put a damper on those chances with her eight saves for the night.

The Maple Leafs have taken more total shots than their opponent in all but three matches this season. Goshen was outshot in losses to Indiana Tech, Indiana Wesleyan, and Mount Vernon Nazarene. But despite losses to St. Francis (Ill.), Saint Mary's College (Ind.), and this match against Bethel, Goshen has still taken more shots in those games. On the season, Goshen has outshot their opponents 157-108. The Leafs have also taken 38 more shots on goal (90-52).

The win for Bethel (3-10-0) gives them half a point in the U.S. Highway 20 Cup rivalry between the two teams. Bethel's four shots on goal came from Karhayu, Jessica Wilker, Marah Franke, and Samantha Vaughn. Goshen had a trio of players with multiple shots this evening. Paige Renshaw had four, Delaney Hoag had three, and Lexy Adamczyk added two more.

The loss puts the Leafs a game under .500 after their home win last weekend against Saint Francis (Ind.). The next match will be on the road Wednesday at 7:00 against #15 Grace. The next home match will be Saturday, October 23rd against #6 Marian – which will be Senior Night.
