Brenneman makes All-Tournament Team but Goshen can’t get past Indiana Tech and Judson

Maple Leafs travel to Spring Arbor on Wednesday

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Goshen played two challenging opponents on Saturday during Day Two of the Liz Lykowski Memorial Tournament. The Maple Leafs won a set against the host, Indiana Tech, but couldn't reel in a win against them or the Judson Eagles.

Indiana Tech came into the match against Goshen with a 15-8 record. But that didn't concern the Maple Leafs when they started the match at 10:00 a.m. The first set was going back and forth with ten different ties. But that changed once Goshen tied it at 19 on a Haylee Pennington kill. That point started a 7-0 run for the Maple Leafs that saw them take the first set 25-19.

Goshen continued the attack in the second set and had a 17-13 lead. The Warriors responded though and scored the next six to take a 19-17 lead and eventually took the set 25-21. The third set belonged to Indiana Tech all the way. They built a quick 4-0 lead and didn't look back – taking the set 25-13.

Down but not out, the Leafs came back fighting in the fourth set. They built up an 11-8 lead before the Warriors scored seven consecutive points. That scoring streak helped guide them to a 25-14 win. Despite the great effort and early success by Goshen, Indiana Tech took the match 19-25, 25-21, 25-13, 25-14. The Maple Leafs had just 19 errors to the Warriors' 29.

Goshen wrapped up the eventful weekend at 12:10 p.m. against Judson. The Eagles also came into the match with an impressive 15-8 record. They controlled the entire match and won in three sets. Goshen had some scoring runs in the first and third sets, but the Eagles were always able to answer. Judson won 25-14, 25-13, 25-16. Emma Dippon played well in the match with four kills and a .500 hitting percentage. Naomi Willis had eight digs which led both teams. Jaelyn Amhdar had another impressive showing with 17 assists – also leading both teams.

Sadie Brenneman earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team. The freshman had a season-high 13 kills against UNOH and 14 digs against Trinity Christian. Her two blocks against Indiana Tech tied her season-best. Indiana Tech went on to win the tournament – winning all four of their matches. Madelyn Omo of Indiana Tech was named the Tournament MVP.

The next match for the Maple Leafs (3-24) is on Wednesday when they travel to take on Spring Arbor. The next home game will be on Friday, October 15th against #17 Taylor.
