HUNTINGTON, Ind. – It was all on the line Tuesday afternoon in Huntington. Goshen needed a win to make it into the Crossroads League Tournament. Their status was still up in the air at halftime, but a little over ten minutes later they carried a 3-0 lead which they maintained for the rest of the game.
"I'm so proud of this team," said head coach
Justin Crew after the match. "It was a total team effort, in a hard environment against a tough opponent. The players stepped up today."
The match didn't just have huge implications for the Maple Leafs, but for Huntington as well. If the Foresters had won, they would be in the tournament since the teams came into the match with the same number of conference wins.
The first half was even with both teams taking six shots and some impressive saves on both sides. MaKiah McCain had four saves. But in the second half, she wouldn't need to make any more.
Goshen (6-10-0, 2-7-0 CL) held Huntington (5-9-3, 1-7-1 CL) to just three shots in the second half. But it is what the Leafs did offensively that stole the show. Just three minutes after the halftime break,
Paige Renshaw found the back of the net to give Goshen a 1-0 lead. Just over two minutes later,
Seja Lang scored the second goal for Goshen. Then five minutes after that,
Brynja Rut Hjartardottir scored the third and final Maple Leafs goal from a pass by
Anita Tavares. Goshen had scored three goals in a seven-minute and 28-second span. They had 16 total shots in the second half.
Goshen has now been victorious over Huntington in four straight games dating back to 2018. The tourney berth for the Leafs is the team's second within the last three years. Previously from 2008-2018, the team had made the tournament just once.
"They have been working so hard all season," Crew added. "I am so happy that the hard work was rewarded today with a trip to the conference tournament."
Goshen enters the tournament as the eighth seed and will face the top-ranked Spring Arbor team. The quarterfinal match will take place on Saturday, November 6
th at 3:00 in Spring Arbor. Should the Maple Leafs advance in the tournament, the remaining games will also be on the road.
