Bontreger scores twice, GC tops Brescia 2-0 in season opener

Maple Leafs blank Bearcats in first head-to-head meeting

OWENSBORO, Ky. — Goshen College won its men's soccer season opener Wednesday afternoon in a 2-0 triumph over Brescia University at Kamuf Park.

Senior Lucas Bontreger scored both goals, getting an assist from Lars Razor on the icebreaker with 4:36 left in the first half and hooking up with Felipe Gallo and Uriel Macias to double the lead with 35:12 left in regulation.

Brescia (0-1) outshot the Maple Leafs 3-1 in the second half, meaning that Bontreger's second goal was the last GC shot of the afternoon, but none of the three Bearcat attempts were on target to threaten GC netminder Matias da Fonseca.

Both goalkeepers, da Fonseca and Brescia's Ruben Burgos, made 2 saves.

Bontreger was the only player on either team to take more than one shot. Razor, Goshen's Connor Wyse, Brescia's Domenico Colletta and Brescia's Luis Baldivieso also hit the target with attempts.

Bontreger's two goals raised his career total to 23 tallies in 43 games. It was his third career multi-goal game and first since Sept. 14, 2019.

GC returns to action at the weekend when it plays Indiana University East at 5 p.m. Saturday. The Red Wolves play their home games at Centerville High School in Centerville, Indiana.
