PITTSBURGH —Amy Drew scored the first two goals of her college career less than half an hour apart in the first half and the Goshen College women's soccer team blanked Point Park University 2-0 Friday night in a non-conference match at Highmark Stadium.
Brynja Rut Hjartardottir added an assist and Makiah McCain saved the only Point Park shot she faced as the Maple Leafs improved to 2-0 to start the season for the first time since 2015. The 2021 campaign marks the first time in 24 years that the Maple Leafs have started the season with two straight clean sheets, something they accomplished in both 1997 and 1994.
Goshen outshot the Pioneers 13-7 for the game, including an 8-3 margin in the second half, and held its host without a shot on goal for the final 68 minutes. Alexandria Jackson had the lone attempt on target for Point Park (0-1).
By the time that attempt happened, though, Drew had already put the Maple Leafs in front with an unassisted goal after 13 minutes and 31 seconds. Hjartardottir assisted on the second strike, which came 5:14 before the intermission.
Despite scoring both goals, Drew did not lead the team in total shots: that honor went to Paige Renshaw and Seja Lang, who each attempted 4. Anita Tavares also shot twice and Beatriz Meneghin added 1.
On the PPU side, Jackson was joined by Jaylin Hunt and TaMaya Wohlford with two shots apiece. Hunt was also booked with less than two minutes to play, marking the first action for the referee's cards in either team's season.
Gillian Bierhals made a single save in goal for the Pioneers.
Goshen returns to the John Ingold Athletic Complex for three of its next four matches, beginning next Wednesday when the team takes on the University of Saint Francis from Joliet, Illinois. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. EDT.
