GOSHEN, Ind. — For more than 80 percent of Wednesday night's match with the University of St. Francis (Illinois), the Goshen College women's soccer team had the better opportunities but couldn't string together the approach for a final shot. The Maple Leafs' hopes for a third straight clean sheet evaporated in the second half, and the team's unbeaten run was gone a quarter-hour later in a 1-0 loss at the John Ingold Athletic Complex.
MaKiah McCain made two saves for the Maple Leafs (2-1), but Alexis Marroquin's goal with 15:00 remaining in regulation stood up as the only scoring.
The teams combined for seven shots in the opening 45 minutes, averaging more than six minutes between attempts. GC held a 4-3 lead on the scoreboard's shot counter at the intermission although the game remained scoreless. Only three of those seven attempts were on target, and each was saved, although USF's first save of the half didn't come until the final minute.
A pair of early-second-half corner kicks failed to materialize for the Saints (2-0), though they nearly cashed in with 32 minutes left when a shot by Claudia Hernandez was saved off the line by a GC defender.
Paige Renshaw had a pair of attempts saved early in the second half and the Maple Leafs got their first corner kick of the match in the 73rd minute. But just when it seemed like momentum might be building, it quickly shifted the other way as Allison Schaar's pass across the top of the penalty area set up a finish from Marroquin for her second goal of the season.
Renshaw and Seja Lang each had game-tying tries blocked in the closing minutes; despite losing based on the most important statistic, GC had a 10-7 edge in total shots.
Yadira Estrada was the shutout goalkeeper with 3 saves for USF.
GC is idle at the weekend before reaching the midpoint of its non-conference schedule on Tuesday when it welcomes St. Xavier University to the Ingold Athletic Complex. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
