Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Tony Miller

Back-and-forth match ends with pendulum in Saint Mary's favor

Lang tallies twice but late goals too much for GC to overcome

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Seja Lang scored twice and Amy Drew racked up a pair of assists Friday night, but Saint Mary's College took the lead on a second-half penalty kick and used an insurance goal with 8:07 remaining to ensure that Goshen College couldn't catch up in a 4-3 women's soccer decision at the Patricia Wiedner Purcell Athletic Fields.

Paige Renshaw opened the scoring for Goshen (3-2) in the eighth minute after Drew won a header in the penalty area while Lang put the Maple Leafs back ahead on a long-distance dedication with 16:29 left in the half and recorded another strike in the closing seconds off a Drew free kick.

Rose Stackhouse tallied her second straight brace for the Belles (4-0), leveling the score in the 22nd minute on a ping-ponging run through the GC defense before scoring the eventual game-winner from the spot of jurisprudence in the 62nd minute.

Izzi Linus got credit for SMC's second equalizer when she knocked a deflected pass in with her thigh 9:48 before halftime and Mary Kaczynski scored on a centering pass from Emily Mikitka to double the lead in the waning moments. Jillian Bowen, Lindsey Herdsman, Sophie Bubnar, Lindsey Adent and Sydney Skarbek also had assists for SMC.

Goshen held a 14-9 advantage in shot attempts and a 10-4 margin in shots on goal, holding its host without a shot on target except for the ones that went in. The Maple Leafs had a 4-3 majority in corner kicks but conceded 11 free kicks while winning 11.

Lang led all players with 5 shots and 4 shots on goal, matching SMC's team in the latter category. Renshaw hit the target twice and Beatriz Meneghin, who added an assist on the last goal, had 3 shots.

Kara Stacey and Brianna Dewey each made 3 saves for Saint Mary's.

The match was the first meeting in 22 years between the two sides and the first time that Goshen has scored multiple goals in the head-to-head series. GC now has 13 goals through five matches this fall, putting the team on pace for its highest-scoring season since 2012. Friday also marked the first time that each team contributed at least one goal in a 7-goal Maple Leaf match since 2013.

Since Goshen played their weekend match on Friday rather than Saturday, the Maple Leafs have an extra day of rest before returning to their usual Wednesday date next week. Indiana Tech will visit the John Ingold Athletic Complex for a 7 p.m. kickoff on Sept. 15.
