Leafs pick up first home win behind goals from Hoag, Meneghin

GC blanks third foe in four tries in 2021

GOSHEN, Ind. — Delaney Hoag scored to break a scoreless deadlock on the midpoint of the first half and Beatriz Meneghin doubled the lead in the final minutes to shut off any hope for a comeback Tuesday evening as the Goshen College women's soccer team topped St. Xavier University 2-0 at the John Ingold Athletic Complex.

Brynja Rut Hjartardottir added an assist and MaKiah McCain made four saves as the Maple Leafs (3-1) posted their third shutout of the season. Goshen finished with advantages of 21-4 in total shots, 15-4 in shots on goal and 13-1 in corner kicks.

Eleven Maple Leafs piled on shot attempts and 10 of those were credited with shots on goal. Meneghin led all players with 4 shot attempts and 3 shots on goal; Madalyne Swallow added 3 shots off the bench and was one of four players who prompted multiple Cougar saves. Seja Lang also took 3 shots.

St. Xavier (0-4) was led by shot attempts from Peyton Fox and Mariyah Leonard. Morgan Demagall made 9 saves on the goal line.

The Maple Leafs took the first seven shots and corner kicks of the game before breaking through with 22:30 left in the opening period on Hjartardottir's pass to Hoag. The team added two more attempts before Fox's shot was stopped in the 32nd minute.

GC took four corner kicks in the first 15 minutes of the second half, resulting in four shots and three saves. Nevertheless, the Cougars remained behind by a single goal and tested McCain with another shot in the 79th minute. Meneghin scored with 3:17 remaining to double the lead.

The Maple Leafs return to action when they play Saint Mary's College on Friday evening at the Angela Athletic Complex in Notre Dame, Indiana.
