SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Goshen men's basketball team picked up a season sweep of Spring Arbor with a thrilling 93-90 double-overtime victory on Saturday. Three players scored 20 or more points, and it ends a conference road game losing streak that is now in the past.
"I'm super proud of our guys," said head coach
Jon Tropf. "Talk about overcoming adversity – we never got rattled." The Maple Leafs had lost their last four games that had gone beyond regulation, including two from this season. It was their first double-overtime win since December 8, 2008, at Cornerstone.
Ryan Mansbarger hit a three with 1:22 to go in regulation – giving Goshen a 74-72 lead. Spring Arbor scored with seven seconds to go and tied it at 74, sending it to overtime. The Cougars scored on their first two possessions in overtime, building a 78-74 lead. Goshen scored the following five points to retake the lead. Spring Arbor had a three-point attempt at the buzzer, but it hit the back iron, and the game went to a second overtime.
Spring Arbor scored the first four points in the second overtime period as well, but this time the Maple Leafs had an even greater answer. GC went on a 7-0 run and led 89-86. They held their lead, and Mansbarger hit two free throws with seven seconds to go to give Goshen a 93-90 lead. During Spring Arbor's final possession, they turned the ball over, and Goshen went on to win.
"I am proud of all 15 guys - they were all a part of this," Tropf said. "We had a great practice yesterday and a great shootaround this morning. I'm glad they got to see the fruits of their labor."
Mansbarger finished with 24 points and sank six of his nine three-point attempts. He also had a double-double with 12 rebounds on the stat sheet. He rounded out his effort with four assists and two steals.
Gabriel McQuay scored 22 points off the bench, and he was 8-15 shooting and 3-6 from behind the arc. The freshman had season-highs in points, minutes, field goals made, and three-pointers made.
Michael Johnson had 21 points, shot 69%, and added five rebounds.
This was Goshen's first road conference win since November 22, 2016. It snaps a 47-game slide that the team was well aware of. After numerous close attempts, it came to an end tonight. Goshen has won three of their last four matchups against Spring Arbor.
Next up for the Leafs is #5 Indiana Wesleyan at home on Tuesday, February 1, and they will play at 7:00 pm in Gunden Gymnasium. Then on Saturday, February 5, it is another home game against #24 Marian at 3:00 pm.
