INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Leafs were in it for 30 minutes, but the Knights controlled the final ten. On Tuesday, the Goshen men's basketball team lost to the #22 Marian Knights in Indy, 83-64. Marian completed the last nine minutes and 56 seconds on a 29-10 run.
Marian held the lead for most of the first half, swinging it in their favor by as many as six points. However, Goshen completed the half with two three-pointers from
Gabriel McQuay and
Greg Johnson to send the Leafs to the locker room with a 39-36 advantage. GC started the second half with two free throws by
Greg Johnson, followed by a three from
Ryan Mansbarger to take an eight-point lead – part of an 11-0 run.
The Knights would chip away at the lead and led 51-50 with under 12:00 to go. Then there was a four-minute and 56-second stretch where Marian went on a 16-0 surge to bring the lead to 18. That five minutes would be the difference, as they went on to win 83-64.
Robert Sanders had a game-high and career-high 19 points. He shot 9-13 from the floor and hit his only three-point attempt.
Ryan Mansbarger scored 15 with three made from behind the arc and six rebounds.
Greg Johnson had ten points and five rebounds and was perfect at the line.
Marian (11-2, 3-2 CL) had five players in double figures. The Knights have now won seven straight games, even though this was their first game in 15 days. They had two games ruled as COVID no-contests and had one postponed. They've played one game in the last 23 days. Marian came into the match ranked 13
th in the NAIA in rebound margin, and they won the category tonight 44-24.
Goshen (5-12, 1-4 CL) had three fewer turnovers than the home team and shot 37% from three despite Marian holding their opponents to shooting 27% from distance this season.
Goshen is back in action on Saturday, January 8, at Mount Vernon Nazarene at 3:00 pm. The next home contest will be Wednesday, January 12, against Grace at 8:00 pm. The women's game will take place that night at 6:00 pm.
