MOUNT VERNON, Ohio – Despite four players scoring in double figures, the Goshen men's basketball team couldn't pull off a road win in Mount Vernon on Saturday afternoon, losing the contest 87-72.
Ryan Mansbarger led the Leafs with 18 points and four assists.
Greg Johnson had 16 and shot 7-9 from the line.
Clayton MacLagan came off the bench to score 12 in the second half and
Elias Ramirez added ten.
The Cougars started the first two and a half minutes of the game with a 10-0 run. Goshen brought it back within four during a couple of occasions in the half, but MVNU led 35-28 at the break.
Baskets in the first minute of the second half by Mansbarger and
Greg Johnson narrowed the lead to three, but that was as close as the Leafs would get. Mount Vernon had a 14-1 run which gave them a 16-point cushion and later led by 23 points. Goshen outscored the home team 27-19 in the final seven minutes and 41 seconds, but it was too little too late, and the Cougars won 87-72.
71% of Mount Vernon's points came in the paint – in part because Goshen held them to shooting 2-16 behind the arc. Kyle Kegley scored 30 for MVNU and had 11 rebounds to go with it. MVNU (12-5, 3-3 CL) have now won three straight games and move to 7-2 at home.
For Goshen (5-13, 1-5 CL), MacLagan scored more points in his ten minutes of action today than his previous four games combined. All his points came from behind the three-point line, and he doubled the number of threes MVNU had as a team.
The next home game for GC is Wednesday, January 12, at 8:00 pm against Grace. This doubleheader with the women's team will be the Destiny Rescue Blackout Game – where fans can assist in the rescue of children who are victims of human trafficking by pledging to donate per assist in the two games. Goshen is pleased to partner with Destiny Rescue and the Grace Lancers for this game.
